The Indians of the United States, also popularly known as Native American (Native American), are the Amerindian ethnic groups that live in the United States and speak Amerindian languages, characterized by their diversity, lifestyle and socioeconomic status.

There are 562 tribal governments recognized at the federal level in the United States. These tribes have the right to form their own government, to enforce laws (both civil and criminal), taxes, to establish requirements for membership, to authorize and regulate activities in the area and to exclude people from the tribal territories. The limitations to the tribal powers of autonomous government are the same limitations applicable to the states: for example, neither the tribes nor the states have the power to wage war, participate in foreign relations or mint money (this includes paper money).
