Although the United States had been supporting France's effort in retaining control of Vietnam, why did the United States continue to give aid to South Vietnam following France's defeat in 1954?

    As it was part of the Truman Doctrine, to keep communism contained, so they funded South Vietnam so that it could fight off North Communist Vietnam.
