    Sharecropping had become something that is widespread in the South as a response to economic upheaval caused all the way by the end of slavery during and after the Reconstruction.

    Explanation:

    Sharecropping was also a way for the poor farmers that were both white and black skinned, to earn a living from the land owned by somebody else.
