During that period the American government took laissez-faire politics, which meant that the government would let the market make its rules and regulate itself. It included the lack of any labor laws. In that time workers did not have laws protecting them, their wages were low, their workplace had no protection, they worked several hours and sometimes died during work. Once workers started to demand better wages and a better workplace, factory owners noticed that if they wanted major profit they would have to prevent unions from forming.
