Many Cherokee opposed to the Indian Removal Act but Major Ridge, a Cherokee leader chosen for just a small part of the Cherokee nation, signed the new Echota treaty ceding Cherokee land. Many Cherokee were forced to relocate to the west of the Mississippi river in what it is known as the Trail of Tears. 4000 Cherokees died in the relocation, most of them due to diseases.
