Why did Germany attack the Soviet Union it's former ally

    Because Hitler wanted oil, and he wanted the British to accept peace. If the Soviet Union fell, Britain would have to accept peace. Hitler also wanted the capture of Soviet Naval Bases, which were threatening his Romanian oil fields.
