Though the Jay Treaty (Nov. 19, 1794) maintained peace between the U. S. and Britain while preserving U. S. neutrality regarding the conflict with Britain and France in 1793, it was also harshly criticized for addressing only few U. S. interests, and granting Britain additional rights.

Before the treaty was signed, Americans were suffering from abuses from Britain even though they had recently won their independence in the Revolutionary War (1775-83). American exports were blocked, British occupated northern forts that they had agreed to vacate in the Treaty of Paris (1783), and also attacked Native Americans there, seized some American naval and military supplies, etc.

People expected a treaty that would bring more justice to American. Instead, it conceded that the British could seize U. S. goods bound for France if they paid for them and could confiscate without payment French goods on American ships. As for Americans interests, the treaty only accomplished to vacate Britain of the northwestern posts and to enhance commercial relationships to a certain extent.
