The United States dealt with a flood of immigrants during the early 20th century through the Americanization Movement-a variety of programs and campaigns aimed at turning foreigners into Americans. At the turn of the 20th century, millions of immigrants poured into the United States.

During the period of 1880 and 1920 over twenty million immigrants entered the USA using different means of transportation. Immigrants came from Europe, Japan, Mexico among other latitudes. The Americanization Movement was born in response to the arrival of emigrants and one the purposes of the movement was to turn immigrants into skilled citizens willing to work in the different industries. On the other hand, The Americanization Movement also aimed at showing immigrants what America was as a society and engaged them with the American culture. For example, education was a very important tool used by most State representatives. Also organizations such as YMCA got involved in this process of Americanization. It is interesting to highlight that even public libraries in the US got involved in the Americanization exercise with immigrants by implementing comprehensive modifications in their programs and activities, for instance most public libraries gathered large amounts of book collections in different disciplines and foreign languages as a way of response to the current needs due to the arrival of emigrants.
