Stephen Douglas was s United States Senator and presidential candidate. While in the house, he played an important role in resolving issues between northerners and southerners over the slavery. Douglas introduced In a bill he wrote in 1854, stating that the people who are eligible to vote in the territory should decide for themselves if they wanted to allow slavery or not.
