The mississippi River was the primary route for the Confederacy when bringing goods, commerce and transportation.

With the "Anaconda Plan" General Scott proposed a plan to get a blockade of southern ports and seized the mississippi River cutting the south in to two. By 1862 the efforts to seize the Mississippi River started and as planned the south was eventually divided, being the Union forces the ones winning the American Civil War.
