What prompted passage of the compromise of 1850?

The passage of 1850's Act was prompted as a way to try to avoid crisis between North and South. The resolutions were introduced by Senator Henry Clay. As part of the Compromise, the Fugitive Slave Act wass amended and slave trade in Washington D. C. abolished.
