Explanation:

After the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I into orbit, the space race began between the US and the USSR. The US had announced plans to launch a satellite in July 1955, with the Vanguard. However the Soviet Union caught the Americans off guard with the Sputnik launch, as it was a technological achievement more impressive than the US proposal. Immediately after the launch, the US started working on another satellite project, developing and launching the Explorer I on January 31, 1958. Not much time later, NASA was officially created on October 1, 1958.
