The Shay's rebellion was an uprising in the western Massachusetts to oppose the debt crisis among people and the increase in taxes by the central government. The fighting between the Shays troops and the state government took place around Springfield during 1786 and 1787. The rebellion was led by Daniel Shays, he had four hundred rebels.

The shays's rebels marched on the Springfield armoury in 1787 to seize the weaponry and to overthrow the government. This attack revealed he weakness of federal government as it was unable to finance the troops to defeat the rebels. The Massachusetts state militia and privately funded local militia managed to defeat them.

This rebellion shaped the US history as it revealed that Articles of Confederation must be reformed to govern the country efficiently, it also led to the constitutional convention. The constitutional convention decided to form stronger and more centralised government.
