    Some Greek cities were democracies, some were oligarchies and some were monarchies or tyrannies ... After Alexander the Great died some Greek city states were dominated by Macedon and others by the Seleucid empire. Rome was a Republic for about five hundred years. It was an oligarchy with elective offices.
