Around the same time that the peyote religion was taking shape in the southern plains of the late 19th century, a secular expression of panindianismo was also emerging. It was the powow institution, a complex of intertribal cultural features that would become even more widely embraced than peyotism. The powows are events that last from a few hours to several days, combining a format of dances, songs, tambourine touches, chats, presents and other activities that can be mixed in different ways. The characteristic types of the powow dance costume show regional and tribal variations in style, but it conforms to a limited set of basic designs, for both men and women. The most striking and easily recognizable is that of an ornamental dancer, who wears circles of colored feathers on the back, at the waist, at the back of the neck and on the front of the arms, and an ornament at caneza of similar feathers, forming a ridge from the front to the rear. The powwow costumes, especially that of men, evolved and continue to evolve from the characteristic models associated with the two dance societies of the closely related plains Indians of the 19th century, the grass dance, among others. With the movement of denro tribes of the plains and between these and the surrounding areas, especially in the wave of the cultural mix of oklahoma, the dances and the types of costumes associated with them became the case of the type of indignity only secondary to the feather war headdresses, in the popular vision of the American public. Apart from the powwows sponsored and enjoyed by the Indians in their own communities for purposes, as well as a sense of Indian indemnity, especially among the Indians of the plains, prairie, plateau and parts of the adjacent cutural areas of the United States of America. Anglo-Saxon tradition.
