During the Lincoln-Douglas debates, Lincoln questioned the moral inequality in the practice of slavery. He questioned the rationality of how African-Americans were not entitled to the natural rights which were enumerated in the Declaration of Independence. According to Lincoln, social equality and political equality existed. The Crittenden Compromise fail to solve the sectional tension over the question of slavery because it gave major concessions to Southern states which ultimately received a lot of rejection and criticisms from the Northern states.
