In 1519, Cortés led an expedition to Mexico with 500 soldiers and 100 sailors. He landed near Veracruz and started to head into the interior of what is now Mexico. He arrived in Tenochtitlán, present-day Mexico City, in November of 1519. There, he captured the leader of the Aztecs, Moctezuma. Moctezuma was killed, and the Aztecs fought until the Spanish were forced to retreat from their city. The Spanish returned to defeat the Aztecs in 1521.
