Why were the landed gentry that replaced the old aristocracy known as scholar-gentry?

    "Scholar gentry" is not a term used in England. Although diminished in power in modern times, the aristocracy and the landed gentry are alive and well in England. But I dare say individual land holdings would be considered modest by US and South American ranchers.
