    A representative democracy is a system of government in which the citizens have the ability to pick their leaders. Americans saw this as an attractive quality because of their experiences as colonists under the control of Great Britain. When they were colonists, they did not have the ability to vote for members of the British government. So when the US broke away from Great Britain and restructured their government, they wanted to make sure the citizens had a voice in the political process.
