The word detente is a French word that means the easing of tensions. This word was used to describe a period of Soviet-U. S. relations in the early 1970s that was categorized by increased cooperation and a general easing of tensions between the two countries. At this time there were high level meetings and visits between the nations leaders as well as a number of major treaties and agreements that were signed between the two nations in the hopes of preventing conflict and escalation.
