Why was the roman empire divided into two halves the empire was split up based on cultural and religious beliefs. it was difficult to protect one large empire against germanic invasions. each half could more easily conquer other countries if they were apart. government officials disagreed over how to rule and thus split up.

    It was divided to improve military response from external threats. So in other words, "it was difficult to protect one large empire against Germanic invasions.
