Why did President Reagan call for Soviet leader Gorbachev to "tear down" the Berlin Wall?

June 12,1987, during a speech at the Brandenburg Gate, near the Berlin Wall, Ronald Reagan addressed directly to Mikhail Gorbachev. He called on the leader of the Soviet Union to destroy the physical symbol of the Iron Curtain that separated the capitalist countries from the communist ones.
