Cities often use the Geographic Information System (GIS) to determine where homes and businesses are built. This computer system figures out how different placing of businesses, factories, and homes are affected by one another. For example, it would determine to not put a factory right next to a neighborhood as this would cause dense pollution near the homes of citizens.
