Why do people seek after supernatural powers?

For many reasons, some being to solve things out of the human control. Other times it is to seek power and authority, sort of like when America launched the first atomic bomb. That powerful blow on a country, put many countries in fear. It posed America as a possible super ally that could protect them or a major threat that would destroy them.
