Lincoln's strategy for provision Fort Sumter S. C. at the beginning of his presidency was choosing a middle ground between two hard choices. He did not surrender Fort Sumter and he also did not force his way in. What he did was to order a delivery of supplies and no attack was going to happen unless the delivery was going to be opposed.
