Why have ukrainians sometimes called their country "little russia"?

    That is because historically the two countries have been extremely close, many claiming that there's no actual difference between the two countries, and since Russia was in charge of Ukraine's territory many times throughout history and is significantly smaller, people called it Little Russia.
