This militia or more commonly known as minutemen, we're able to protect cities at a moments notice. they were not country soldiers but civilians who took up arms in defense of the town. their contribution you can see today as the formation of the national Guard. but back then it's contribution was in knowledge of the surrounding areas (guerrilla warfare) and intimation (massive numbers from thought to be none).
