The first reason is because of resources. Africa had many raw and natural materials. They exploited goldfields and diamond minds.

The second reason is strategy. They were a 'colonizing' government and they acquired land, labor, capital, and other resources from their conquest. This also formed a 'ally' between them and their conquest. They mainly wanted to maintain control of specific territories for strategic reasons. South Africa provided a stop for their ships when they go to India.

The third reason is because of rivalry. Each European countries wanted to showcase their power to other European countries. The Britain, German, and French were the main dominant powers. Each country wanted to increase their prestige by acquiring as much territories as they can in different areas around the world.
