Pioneers who journeyed to the West moved quickly through mountain passes to avoid traveling

They did this because gathering on famous roads and trails in large groups could lead to ambushes by the Native Americans. This way they would travel through the mountains in smaller groups and avoid attracting unwanted attention. They were plagued by diseases however durign the road and often storms would prevent them from continuing.
