    The Radical Republicans wanted to reunite the nation under the Constitution and restore the Constitutional rights of the South as soon as possible. The War Democrats wanted to punish the South for their secession and the war and believed they gave up their Constitutionally protected rights when they chose to secede. The test was this conflict between the two major parties.
