Why did Columbus refer to the people he met as Indians?

Because that is how they introduced themselves

Because he mistakenly thought he had arrived in the East Indies

    Because he mistakenly thought he had arrived in the East Indies.

    Columbus had been trying to find a new route to the Indies, so when he landed in America he thought that he had landed there.
