Why did states establish republican forms of government?

    States established Republican forms of government because they believed that the manner in which the British government implemented several taxation policies was unconstitutional, as Parliament formulated and passed such jurisdiction without "representation" - giving birth to the famous phrase "no taxation without representation" - and thereby undermining the Colonists' "rights as Englishmen".
