The Bering Strait is located between Russia and North America. It is named by Vitus Jonassen Bering (lived from 1681 to 1741), who was a Danish cartographer and explorer in Russian service. The bering Strait and the Bering Land Bridge were named in his honor. It is believed that a small group of people arrived to the Bering Land Bridge from eastern Siberia during the last Glacial period before expanding into the settlement of the Americas about 16,500 years ago.
