The 1930's in the US was in the Great Depression. Entertainment started up in the 1920's with radio and theater.

The entertainment industry did not affect the economy in the 1930's as much as it did affect the people. At the time, many who were going through rough times would go to the theaters and watch a movie to get away from all of the troubles in reality. It was sort of a getaway for the people at the time.

I would say that this mindset in America made entertainment during the Great Depression an essential distraction.
