Peru was the first Latin American country to establish diplomatic relations with Japan and to accept Japanese immigration. The Japanese began arriving in Peru in the late 1800's. The economic state of Japan was poor, and the Japanese immigrated to Peru to find new job opportunities. Peru has the second largest enclave of Japanese in South America next to Brazil.
