Why was democracy no longer thought of as a dangerous tendency by the 1820's? What democratic features of American life would have amazed European visitors?

It was believed for some time that democracy would allow the uneducated and malicious among society alter the course of the nation. This turned out to not be the case. Since many European countries during this time were not democratic, the fact that people could vote at all would have been amazing.
