The US Supreme Court overturned the verdict in appeal. It took the view that the confession was inadmissible evidence in the case, because the suspect was not informed beforehand of his rights and deprived of fundamental rights of the defense lawyers.

The Supreme Court stated that if the suspect asks for a lawyer present, the hearing may be continued under the rule of his subsequent inadmissible as evidence.
