Write two or three sentences explaining what Lincoln believed the Civil War was being fought to accomplish. Think about his descriptions of why the war was fought and what would happen if the Union won.

    Lincoln believed that the war was being fought to keep the country together. He wanted to make the nation free and equal again.

    Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery, thus he tried to ban slavery because the south was pro slavery, left the union, and there was a bitter conflict between the south and the north. He wanted to unite the north and south, and abolish slavery once and for all. Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery and mend the broken south at the same time.
