Who were progressives, and what did they believe caused social problems?

The Progressives in the US were people who in general supported any movement that advanced the rights of the majority in the country, and thought that the rich and powerful were corrupt and causing social problems. This is why they fought to "break up the banks" and supported women's and minority rights.
