Why does King use this allusion?

The king use his allusion to urge patriotic responsibility and to appeal to his critics' intellect. King first uses historical allusion by referring to Abraham Lincoln and how, "Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation."
