What caused the split in Muslim empire into Shiites and Sunnis

    The split was caused when the question of who should become the leader of the Muslims after the death of the Prophet Muhammad arised.

    Shiites believed that Ali and his descendants are the ones chosen to control the Muslim empire. The Sunnis believed that caliphs (military generals) should lead the Muslim state.
