Why might americans have thought that immigrants from eastern and southern europe would have trouble fitting in with american society

    They feared new immigrants would take away their jobs, or drive down the wages by accepting lower pay. They thought they were not assimilating or fitting in with American society. Blamed immigrants for increasing crime, unemployment, called for legal restrictions to stop people from coming to the US
