    Pompei was the European city that was covered in ash by a volcano which erupted in 79 CE. Pompei was an ancient Roman city which was located in the modern day city of Naples. Mount Vesuvius was the volcano that destroyed the city of Pompei and covered Pompei in 4 to 6 metres of ash. This is the city that came under the domination of Rome in the 4th century BC. At the time of destruction of the city, the population of the city was estimated to about 11000. The city got destroyed 160 years after it was formed. The city also had a very complex and imaginative water system.
