By shutting down southern ports Confederate forces were affected by the inability to engage in trade and to maintain economic ties with the international market specifically Europe. Without the ability to trade crops such as Cotton and Tobacco to European buyers this hurt the South's ability to raise revenue and fight the North in the Civil War.
