Did the war of 1812 hel or hert the young united States

In 1812 the British attacked the Capital, so I guess it did because it took out the central government system. Washington D. C was a crucial part then, and that was where major decisions were made when something went wrong. So it did affect the United States, but not enough to damage the country so much that we could not fix it.
