This, Napoleon believed, would ruin the finances of the island nation, which depended on buying and selling with its neighbors. The system did not work, however, and was unpopular with the Europeans. This is true. Nobody like Napoleon so they didn't respect his Continental System and they kept trading with Britain. Napoleon tried to invade Russia because of this but he failed and had to retreat, like most people who tried to invade Russia did. This was just one of the many reasons that led to his downfall.
