Adam Smith presented his philosophy on Capitalism on the book "An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations". He wrote this book in 1776 in opposition to Mercantilism.

Adam Smith argued that if a man is given the freedom to produce and exchange goods in both domestic and international markets, he could prosper in life without depending so much on the government. He also said that the responsibilities of the government should be limited to national defence, education, public works, upholding of legal rights, and punishment of crimes.
