It was a debate over the nullification of unconstitutional federal tariffs as complained by South Carolina. This created a division inside the administration and a debate between President Jackson and Vice President Calhoun, from South Carolina.

South Carolina thought that President Jackson would address their concern after winning the election, but he did not make any action about it.
