Indentured servants were necessary in Virginia because of the the rapidly expanding tobacco market. Tobacco is labour intensive, so many laborers were required to grow it. An uneven split in the population between men and women also led to more servants being required as men outnumbered women. Additionally, the high mortality rate meant more servants had to be brought in.
