As a result of the American Civil War, A. The United States ended slavery within its borders. Understand that slavery was actually in the process of becoming prohibited in the US prior to the end of the war. In January of 1864, Congress (minus the southern delegates, of course, as they were in the Confederate States) began to deliberate upon the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery. Following the readmittance of Southern states after the war, the delegates from those states were subject to the provisions of the amendment.
